Pental Quartz in Blue Belgian Satin
Countertop guys came on Tuesday morning. Of course things were not smooth sailing. Apparently the contractor who installed the sink installed it a tad too low and it had to be readjusted to come closer to the countertop. Otherwise the gap would have been too much for the silicone to be effective.
They initially wanted me to call my contractor to come back and readjust it, but i just wanted to get the installation finished so I asked if they were able to do it. They were kind enough to fix the issue and built another support for the base of the cast-iron sink to reinforce it.
Everything fits where it’s suppose to (although the stove is a super tight squeeze - i swear it barely fits). the plumber passed by the house later on that afternoon and took a look at everything. he said he could come by one day next week and bang everything out. i can have a working kitchen and working bathrooms in time for kiddo’s first day of school!
i’m so relieved although i think i’m in denial because i should be packing up stuff to move in next week. instead i’m not anywhere near that stage. i still have to pick a room where we will be holed up for the next couple of weeks and clean it meticulously. then i can start moving things into the room including a bed and our clothes.
We’ve almost got a kitchen!
This weekend we picked up the last bathroom vanity we needed. painted more windows. had to remove and rehang the upper cabinets because the stove was not centered with the center upper (where the hood will be). it’s still not centered 100% but it’s less noticeable than before.
so this is our final layout (fridge is not in the picture). i’ve been trying to schedule the countertop guy all day today, but no one ever wants to call me back these days. i’m pretty tired of people promising things and not delivering and i’m really tired of people not calling back when they say they will.
laid out the subfloor for the mudroom floors as well. the tile isn’t happening anymore, so we decided just to use the leftover hardwood and run it through the mudroom. the subcontractor we were using turned out to be completely unreliable - holding up this job for months with tiling the three bathrooms. if i wait for tile, i could be waiting another 3 months.
Mid august update
Besides paint, we also got the upper cabinets installed. We were supposed to get the countertops measured this past weekend, but it’s been the biggest headache.
Two bathrooms are completely tiled. We are just waiting on the last bathroom’s shower to get tiled and bathroom tile is done.
That was also supposed to be completed this weekend, but the guy ran out of tile and wasn’t able to get more tile until today.
So once we get this countertop installed, we can call back the plumber to hook up the water and get the house some working bathrooms and kitchen.
We need to buy one more bathroom vanity and all the faucets, shower and bath knobs and heads, two toilets and a partridge in a pair tree. We also need to get all the light fixtures and ceiling fans that the electrician has to connect.
Once we have all this, we can call our contractor back to do all the finish plumbing, electrical and hvac.
Since kiddo starts school next month, this wonder of wonders, miracle or miracles needs to happen in the next two weeks.
Spent the weekend painting windows. We were too cheap have the windows painted in the factory so we bought them in unfinished pine and painted it ourselves.
After 5 windows, I finally gained a proper technique to even brush strokes, straight lines and getting the tiny corners and crevices.
But my absolute favorite part was doing all the little touch ups and missed corners and edges that required the thinnest of brushes. I borrowed one of kiddo’s art brushes and just started filling in all the little missed spots. I don’t know what it was, but it made me feel like a legitimate homeowner.
I could have done that for hours.
since the 2015 ikea catalog arrived, i’ve been obsessing over the knopparp loveseat for our porch. the porch is pretty narrow - a little over 4 ft from the wall to the banister, but this gives us just enough room to stick our little knopparp sideways on the porch, in the far corner. the porch gets amazing shade. This whole summer it’s been a relief to have that space to sit out and just enjoy the breeze since we don’t have any fans or the a/c installed yet.
the gray couch with some cute pillows and a small desk for my laptop, books and many, many cups of coffee.
i’m imagining september days sitting out on that porch while waiting for kiddo’s bus to arrive home from school. work laptop, a cup of coffee, and a little bob marley to keep me company. late afternoons with a book, a blanket and a nice breeze.
i’ve been very tempted to run to ikea and purchase it so many times this past week, but we have so much stuff to do before i can even start thinking about the porch. so in the meantime, i shall continue to daydream about my little gray couch.
I’ve never seen a more affectionate celebrity family than David Beckham and his boys.
I think it’s really cute.
Currently: shopping for kiddo’s pre-kindergarten uniform, bookbag + shoes.
Bookbag requirements: must fit a folder, snacks & a change of clothes. Kiddo requested a red bookbag. I wanted one that would last through 1st grade and have a side pocket for a water bottle. Patagonia Poco Mas 15 fit all these requirements. On sale, $35.
His uniform consists of white/navy/maroon polo shirts, khaki/navy pants and Velcro sneakers. I was on the look out for pull up khakis so he wouldn’t have to deal with zippers and buttons. H&M pants fit the bill. Good sales at Old Navy and H&M right now.
We are all set for September!
We have appliances and a sink!
